South Australia (SA)
This state was proclaimed a colony in 1836 and in the following decade German Lutherans arrived after fleeing religious persecution in Europe and settled in the Adelaide Hills and Barossa Valley establishing the now flourishing wine growing industry and social liberty that the state is famous for. A hundred or so years later, saw the further advent of thousands of Italian migrants making the state home and bringing with them flamboyant European styles
and the delicious Mediterranean cuisine.

South Australia is located in the southern central part of the country and the state is one of incredible contrasts. To the north, endless miles of desert (just a couple hours from Adelaide) and to the south-east, fertile and rich vales. Just north of the capital, are the magnificent Flinders Ranges which are one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. In the centre, one finds Wilpena Pound (Ikara to the Adnyamathanha – the natives who originally lived in this area).
The state’s Southern Ocean coastline of over 3 000 kilometres takes in the Great Australian Bight’s sheer cliffs and the wetlands of the Coorong, near the mouth of the mighty 650 kilometre Murray River. |

There are 346 islands off the coast. The most famous and popular would be Kangaroo Island – Australia’s third largest island. Attractions of this island include a large native animal population – particularly kangaroos and coastal scenery both rugged and dangerous with over 80 shipwrecks surrounding the island. |

Adelaide is one of the best planned cities in the world thanks to its first surveyor, Colonel William Light. The city was settled in 1836 and has the fine reputation of being Australia’s first free settlement. There are many beautiful parklands found amidst the few skyscrapers and architectural mix of both heritage and contemporary styles. |
